Background:

The Renaissance outreach (funded through Blackpool Council & Lancashire County Council Public Health) supports in situ sexual health advice, education and referrals in the public sex environments of Blackpool & Lancashire, targeting gay, bisexual men, and men who have sex with men.

 

Opportunity-

 

PSE sessional outreach worker 8 hours per week at £10 per hour. The project will require weekend and late evening working and travelling to and from area’s whilst on shift (predominantly Blackpool for this post) – own transport would be advantageous, expenses provided.

 

Candidates will need the following criteria:-

  • Good communication and listening skills
  • Interest/knowledge in sexual health
  • Interest/experience of outreach working
  • Administration skills
  • Knowledge of issues facing gay, bisexual and MSM
  • Knowledge of local supporting Services

 

Please note: It is an Occupational Requirement of this role that the successful candidate is a man due to the need to access public sex environments

Post Title:                   Outreach Worker (PSE with men who have sex with men in public places) Sauna and Venue

 

Hours:                         8 hours per week

 

Duration of Contract:           12 months fixed term contract

 

Accountable to:         Renaissance at Drugline Lancashire

 

Line Manager:            Renaissance at Drugline Lancashire

 

Key tasks:                   To contact men using public sex environments, saunas and venues and disseminate information and resources relating to sexual health including the prevention of HIV

 

Main Duties:              

–                             To identify public sex environments, sauna’s and venues in the locality

–                             To appropriately distribute information and condoms to men using public sex environments, venues and saunas

–                             To sensitively ascertain sexual health needs if opportunity arises

–                             To identify gaps or inappropriate service provision

–                             To maintain confidentiality, minimal records

–                             To develop supportive work with co-worker

–                             To carry out appropriate referrals to service

–                             To meet with manager and other outreach workers on agreed regular basis

–                             To assist the monitoring and evaluation process by completing weekly project sheets

 

Skills:

  • A high level of interpersonal skills (essential)
  • Experience of working with gay and bisexual men (desirable)
  • Ability to work as part of a team (essential)
  • A knowledge of the issues relating to men using public sex environments, saunas and outreach venues (desirable)
  • A knowledge of HIV and other STI’s and other men’s sexual health issues (essential)
  • Experience of outreach work / community work (desirable)

  • Persistence
  • Enthusiasm and a commitment to the work, feeling comfortable about ones sexuality and that of others
  • The ability to work with minimal supervision
  • The ability to relate to a wide range of men who have sex with men
  • Ability to cope with stress
  • A clear understanding of professional and personal boundaries and ability to respect such boundaries
  • A non-judgemental attitude with a commitment to equal opportunities and challenging HIV related discrimination

 

Please Note: Outreach workers are expected not to engage in cottaging and cruising in the areas for the duration of the project
