Finding placements

There are lots of places where placement opportunities are advertised; most of these are online but there are also events on campus where you can meet employers and talk to them directly about the placement opportunities they offer.

Before you start looking for placements think about what kind of graduate job you might like, what companies inspire you or if you aren’t sure, book an appointment with a Careers Adviser to chat through your options.

Vacancies is the Careers Service’s online database, where we advertise all the placement opportunities that employers send to us. They send them to us because they’re specifically interested in recruiting you so keep checking back here so you can find out about opportunities as they come up.

Keep your options open

Vacancies isn’t the only place that placements are advertised. A lot of companies will advertise under the ‘careers’ section of their own websites and there are some websites that specialise in advertising placement opportunities so add these to your browser too:

Don’t forget to network

Many of our students find their placements through networking and sending out speculative applications so don’t be put off if you can’t find what you’re looking for in the suggestions above. Have you:

  • Asked family or friends if they know of any potential opportunities?
  • Found out if your tutors or department have links with any organisations?
  • Researched companies working in your area of interest; even if they’re not advertising a position you could send them a speculative application?

Social media

More and more opportunities are now advertised by companies on Twitter and Facebook. Following the companies you are interested in means you will see opportunities as soon as they arise.

Make sure that you have built a strong and professional online presence on social media. Remember that prospective employers will look you up!

Why not also follow the Blackburn College Careers Team on Twitter? We continually post work placement vacancies and share advice that you might find helpful.
