Blackburn College and University Centre has been working with East Lancashire Hospice to secure a number of work placement opportunities for our current students. The roles available are:
- Maintenance support -Work with maintenance in carrying out ad hoc and planned maintenance works,
which could include:
· Organising furniture and equipment for meetings
· Assisting with legionella checks
· Arranging seasonal decorations
· Cleaning windows, air conditioning vents and strip light covers etc
· Assisting with fire equipment checks
· Painting walls / woodwork
· Working in the garden and grounds
· Power washing garden paths
- Catering Support -· Work with catering staff preparing light meals, salads and sandwiches
· Serve meals in the hospice restaurant
· Wash pots and support catering team in cleaning the kitchen , serving and dining areas
· Prepare Tea and Coffee trolleys for meetings and education
- Administration -· Taking telephone enquiries
· Inputting data onto a database
· Ordering stationary
· Working on reception
- Technology Champion -· Review databases and spread sheets to identify ways of streamlining data collection and reporting
· Hold workshops showing staff , volunteers and patients how to use technology such as Facebook, skype, Instagram and internet shopping applications to support promotion of hospice services , allow people to keeping in touch with those important to them and enhance their lives
· Provide one to one support with staff and patients in using technology as described above
· Produce simple how to guides for using applications as described above
· Suggest technological solutions that may streamline work or enhance patient experiences working with Senior managers to roll out their use
- Making Memories -· Using effective communication and interpersonal skills, engage with patients and those that matter to them in order to better understand their personal preferences and so help quality of life.
· Work with individuals and groups supporting creative/therapeutic activity under the direction of registered nursing staff. This may include:
– Reading aloud from books and other media of interest, using appropriate, engaging tone and expression
– Supporting selection of music/talking books and being present where appropriate to enable enjoyment of these.
– Leading or participating in table games of particular interest or significance to patients and families
– Supporting individuals or small groups to create memories and legacies through a variety of media including memory boxes, cards, letters, videos and craftwork
– Developing and/or supporting diversional activity on an individual or group basis including for example film afternoons and seasonal events
· Support hospitality by preparing hot and cold drinks for people where requested to do so during planned activity
- Friendly Faces -· Meet and greet patients and those that matter to them, ensuring they feel welcome and comfortable whilst awaiting clinic appointments, offering company and refreshments where appropriate to do so
· Prepare for, greet and make welcome any new patients attending the hospice and orientate them to our facilities in keeping with agreed standard
· Develop own awareness of available hospice clinical services and provide service information leaflets (where not already provided), noting and reporting any queries raised to clinical staff
· Provide a supportive presence when escorting patient, visitors and professional staff to hospice departments (this might include patients being transferred by ambulance to the Inpatient Unit)
· Develop understanding of the hospice reception volunteer role and their valuable contribution to hospice services
· Contribute to reception activity including for example the transfer of mail / parcel deliveries to hospice departments
· Support clinical staff in the maintenance of clinical rooms, corridors/waiting areas in keeping with specified standards
· Participate in debrief/reflection sessions to share and learn from experiences
· Develop own communication skills and an empathetic ear whilst working with staff, patients and those that matter to them.
- Supporting Complementary Therapy Provision (Ages 18+) -· Develop own communication skills and an empathetic ear whilst working with staff, patients and those that matter to them.
· Prepare and maintain the therapeutic environment in keeping with specified hospice standards and requirements
· Work with groups of individuals supporting therapeutic activity under the direction of CT practitioners. This may include:
– Participating in the delivery of CT lead therapeutic group work for those patients attending the hospice creative and support therapy department
– Supporting the provision of restorative therapeutic support sessions for staff on an individual or small group basis
– Contributing to the provision of therapeutic support for those that matter to our patients
– Contribute to service development discussions and evaluation processes regarding CT provision
· Support hospitality by facilitating the availability of hot and cold drinks where appropriate to do so during planned activity
This is a fantastic opportunity for suitable students to gain valuable work experience from September / October 2017.

Volunteer Van Driver
Working as part of the team of staff and volunteers in the East Lancashire Hospice Furniture Warehouse. Using a Hospice vehicle, carry out pre-planned collections and deliveries of donations and bought goods that are sold to raise funds for East Lancashire Hospice.
We have shifts available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday 9am to 4pm or Saturday 9am to 1pm.
You will be given a regular day which enables us to be able to plan shifts and allows you know which day and time your regular commitment is going to be. However, a flexible approach would be appreciated.

Skills, knowledge, abilities and qualities
- Full driving license with a maximum of three penalty points
- Over the age of 25 (this is a condition of our vehicle insurance)
- Physically fit and able to lift
- Pass an occupational health eye sight test
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Comfortable talking to people and enjoys meeting new people
- Ability to communicate with people
- Smart presentable appearance
- Experience of van driving may be an advantage but is not essential
