Volunteer Vacancies with Age UK Blackburn with Darwen for September 2015
We need volunteers to befriend and support older people who have recently experienced a traumatic event such as bereavement, long stay in hospital, recovery from an operation etc. by befriending you can help improve their self confidence and give them the support they need to get back to doing things how they did before the event.
We have many older people who like to attend our Ageing Well activities such as bowling, or walking or swimming, but have early onset dementia. We need volunteers to take them to the activity, stay during the participation (or join in themselves) and make sure that person gets home safe and sound.
The older people who are on our waiting list for this service are usually frail, disabled, isolated and have many health issues, they are usually unable to get out of the house and the only people they ever see are their carers (paid not family) and health professionals. Volunteers visit and chat to them for a couple of hours a week about life the universe and everything! From Football to knitting, to films to food.
- Advice & Information (General)
Based in the Library you would give advice to older people on a wide range of topics from benefits, to non residential care, consumer advice and Financial matters (you will be given training)!
- Advice & Information (Outreach)
Volunteers are needed to go out to people’s homes who cannot get into the library to access the types of advice listed above.
- Ageing Well – IT support (Outreach)
Visiting their home, you will teach older people how to use an iPad, or laptop, then how to Skype, use email and access the internet, even teach them how to use Facebook and Twitter. This is part of a project to combat loneliness and isolation.
Gain a recognised qualification in sports coaching by working closely with our Ageing Well Team, from swimming to Scuba Diving, exercising and indoor skydiving, plus many other activities they provide to older people. This is part of a project to encourage older people to become more active to improve their health and wellbeing.
We need a driver who can collect all the bags clothes that are donated to us from local people, but also be able to remove items from the shop to the tip/recycle centre and be able to keep the van in good condition, by ensuring its running well and is MOT’d and serviced regularly,
A volunteer is needed to drive the minibus as Hopwood Court daycare centre – you would be picking older people up from their homes in the morning and dropping them home in the afternoon, also you would be driving them on days out and to do some activities.
We want a volunteer who can assist the driver in getting people on and off the vehicle safely, also to assist the driver with anything else that may come up on a journey.
Every day, up to 40 frail, disabled and lonely older people come to our daycare centre at Hopwood court on Audley range. They come so they can spend time with people, have a hot nutritious meal, have company, share interests, watch TV, do crafts, even to have a bath or a shower. We need volunteers to assist staff with the activities and help with mealtimes.
- Living Well – Here to Help Project
We get referrals from medical professionals such as GPs, Hospitals, district nurses for older people. The project aims to reduce the number of hospital admissions for older people by offering our Here to help service. This service needs more “Living Well Volunteers”, who can support older people in their own home with activities, hobbies, correspondence, appointments etc.
This role would suit someone who is outgoing, and can chat to people at all levels, you could be supporting our Volunteer Co-ordinator, with some administrative tasks, but you would also be able to attend events, promote the charity & volunteering, be able to identify where to recruit potential volunteers, and travel all over Blackburn with Darwen. (car use essential)
